What sets Whitetail 101 apart?
1. It's comprehensive. The full guide contains more than 30 lessons! That may sound like a lot, but the average lesson takes less than 30 minutes to complete. At the end of each you'll be prompted with "Next Steps" so you make real, measurable progress towards your goals every day. If you can dedicate half an hour each day, you can complete this course in about a month.
2. It's fun. We find that humans learn best from other humans! That's why we inject personality, anecdotal evidence and stories into our lessons. That includes a few times the deer got the best of us. Everyone knows Mother Nature can be unpredictable. We've found she also has a good sense of humor.
3. The course is the product. Many how-to videos you'll find about hunting exist to market products. Whitetail 101 isn't designed to sell you stuff, it's designed to teach you what you need to know to be a safe, ethical and effective sportsman. In fact, our goal is to provide so much value that you'll save far more than you paid for the course by not wasting money on stuff you didn't need! Each lesson builds on knowledge from the last, and brings you one step closer to your first deer. Preview full lessons for free and start making progress today.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the course start and finish?
The course starts now and never ends! It is a completely self-paced online course - you decide when you start and when you finish. However, we do have some recommendations on how fast you should progress through the material to ensure you retain enough of the information to be effective. If you're able to commit an average of thirty minutes per day, you should be able to complete the course in around 4 to 8 weeks. Bear in mind we'll be assigning homework throughout the course. Items like applying for hunting permits, researching suitable ground, scouting and shopping for essential items will require additional time investment. We've had motivated students succeed in getting out and harvesting their first deer within just a few weeks of starting our course. Ideally, those starting with zero hunting experience will want to complete Whitetail 101 at least a month or two before the start of their first season. This allows more time for practicing with their weapon, scouting multiple locations, etc.
How long do I have access to the course?
How does lifetime access sound? After enrolling, you have unlimited access to this course for as long as you like - across any and all devices you own. Check out the MyTeachable smartphone app to download lesson materials and bring us everywhere you go!
What is your return policy?
We think you're really going to love Whitetail 101. But if you don’t, please contact us via email at [email protected] within 30 days of purchase with a description of your problem. Having trouble navigating something or feel we've explained something poorly? One of us will gladly help personally. If we can’t find a resolution that makes you happy, we’ll issue a full refund.
How long does this course take to complete?
The course consists of about 35 multimedia lessons. If you're able to commit an average of 30 minutes per day, 5 days a week - you can build the knowledge and skills to be a safe and effective deer hunter in about 4-8 weeks. You can progress through this course as fast or slow as you like, but it's intended to be completed at a rate of around one lesson per day. This is because there's often steps you'll need to take (examples: purchasing a hunting license, identifying a parcel of property to hunt, or researching essential gear and clothing) after completing a lesson. We also arranged the curriculum very meticulously, so progress through it in order - don't skip around!
Is Whitetail 101 a substitute for my state's Hunter Education requirement?
No. Hunter Safety (a.k.a. Hunter Education) courses are administered by licensed, state-approved instructors or state officials themselves. There is no substitute for a state-approved Hunter Safety Course. Whether it's required by law in your state or not (most require it), new hunters who have completed one of these courses have a huge leg up. We absolutely endorse these courses regardless of whether taking one is legally required in the state you plan to hunt. Where a Hunter Safety Course leaves off, Whitetail 101 picks up and dives a lot deeper.
Are the instructors in Whitetail 101 attorneys, government officials, or representatives of any government agency?
No. Throughout the course, you'll hear us refer to certain government agencies or state and federal laws. All of these references are purely illustrative and should NOT be used as legal advice. In fact, the context with which we refer to any of the above is often to illustrate the importance of referring to state and local government resources. Laws vary from state to state, and are subject to change. Unless explicitly otherwise stated, no individual appearing in this series is a government official, representative of any government agency, or a licensed legal professional of any kind. Utilize the guidance received through our course to better understand how and where to obtain trustworthy information. Always refer legal questions to government resources and/or agents, or consult with an attorney. Any safety demonstrations in this course are purely illustrative and supplemental, and should not be construed as replacements for any instructions or safety manuals included with any of the products shown or referred to in this course.
Can I use this course if I'm not from the United States?
Yes, but the lesson material has been produced by and written primarily for US-based hunters. While we are not well-studied on Canadian hunting and firearm regulations, many of the topics we cover conceptually to help our US-based students understand what they should anticipate from a legal perspective as they navigate their respective states' Department of Natural resources or Fish & Wildlife websites should still provide some context for our neighbors to the North. Remember, we're Americans and are thus less informed regarding Canadian regulations. The same can be said for residents of other countries where white-tailed deer are common and regarded as a legal game species. As the name suggests, our course relates specifically to white-tailed deer. Much of the information in this course will be relevant for deer hunters of many countries and regions, but many of the references to food sources, weather, etc and their effects on deer behavior may not be as relevant.
Is Whitetail 101 a good solution if I want to hunt the backcountry?
The course material you'll find in Whitetail 101 is relevant for hunting whitetails of just about any terrain, and there are certainly folks who hunt white-tailed deer in vast expanses of public, backcountry land. But since a majority of us whitetail addicts tend to hunt areas of a few square miles or less, often within a mile or two of a farm or road, we decided to stick mainly to covering the most common practices in our 101 guide. Aside from their resiliency and ability to survive in proximity to humans, a big reason why whitetails are so widespread and commonly hunted is that in many cases you don't have to travel very far from home to find deer. Additional skills and gear are essential to a successful backcountry expedition.. As such, these skills deserve their own dedicated time and curriculum and are not part of Whitetail 101.
